Waialae Residence (1987)
Concrete, steel and glass residence is accessed by cul-de-sac and opens to Waialae golf course and ocean views beyond. Horizontaland vertical design grid is based on the Tatami. The home was designed to suit the needs of everyday family life and also be adaptable to entertaining larger gatherings island lifetstyle. The exterior glass wall facing the golf course retracts into a solid pocket and a lap pool acts as a safety barrier.
The living room converts to informal cinema theatre for screenings following a luau. Cylindrical kitchen at front of the house opens to bar and serving area. North facing clerestory lights provide individual daylighting to all bedrooms. The Master suite contains a "secret" stair loft study that overlooks the view.
